Enabling Customers with Disabilities and Special Needs (508 Compliance)

DuroPC is committed to providing industrial computers and computer accessories that are accessible to all of our customers, including those with disabilities and special needs.

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act addresses various means for disseminating information, including computers, software, and electronic office equipment. The act requires that Federal agencies (e.g., Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE)Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Transportation Department, etc) make any electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities, including employees and members of the public.

A Voluntary Product Accessibility Template, or VPAT, is an informational tool developed to show how a product meets key regulations of Section 508. The following VPAT document describes how the accessibility features of DuroPC rackmount computer systems address the requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

(a) All mechanically operated controls and keys shall comply with §1194.23 (k) (1) through (4). Products which have mechanically operated controls or keys shall comply with the following:

§1194.23 (k)(1) Controls and Keys shall be tactilely discernible without activating the controls or keys.

DuroPC offers standard keyboards which provide marks on the “J”, “F” and “5” keys with geographic spacing.

§1194.23 (k)(2) Controls and Keys shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching, twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate controls and keys shall be 5 lbs. (22.2N) maximum.

DuroPC’s rackmount computer systems have controls and keys which are operable with one hand and less than 5 lbs. of pressure.

§1194.23 (k)(3) If key repeat is supported, the delay before repeat shall be adjustable to at least 2 seconds. Key repeat rate shall be adjustable to 2 seconds per character.

The Microsoft OS allows the operator to set a Windows derived delay between activation of keys.

§1194.23 (k)(4) The status of all locking or toggle controls or keys shall be visually discernible, and discernible either through touch or sound.

The Microsoft OS has accessibility features that provide an audible “beep” when locking or toggle controls and keys are activated.

(b) If a product utilizes touchscreens or touch-operated controls, an input method shall be provided that complies with §1194.23 (k) (1) through (4).

DuroPC’s rackmount computer systems do not utilize touchscreens or touch-operated controls.

(c) When biometric forms of user identification or control are used, an alternative form of identification or activation, which does not require the user to possess particular biological characteristics, shall also be provided.

(d) Where provided, at least one of each type of expansion slots, ports and connectors shall comply with publicly available industry standards
